Rose Dolores, Ziegfeld girl in peacock plume dress with feathers spread out

From the Library of Congress website: Always known simply as “Dolores,” she became one of the most famous of Ziegfeld’s show girls, appearing in editions of his Follies and Midnight Frolics. She is one of many Ziegfeld girls photographed by Alfred Cheney Johnston. This photograph is particularly significant as a record of a spectacular design. It was in the Frolics that Dolores wore this white satin costume with pearls and an enormous fan towering over her statuesque figure.

"The colors in the feathers of a bird are determined two factors: pigment and structure. For example, the green in some parrots is a result of yellow pigments over blue-reflecting feathers. In the case of a white peacock, its unusual lack-of-color is due to a missing pigment. This missing pigment is dark and absorbs incident light, making diffracted and interference light visible (i.e. common peacocks). The effect is similar to that of oil on water."

What's a castle without peacocks?

And a parrot!

We're all so familiar with this logo that sometimes it doesn't even register as a peacock. It's looked like this since 1986, but before that, it looked like this

and before that (1957-61) it looked like this.

Before that, there was no peacock at all. The peacock was introduced to indicate the increased color programming on the NBC network. Read more here.

Found this little gem a few days ago, walking around Boulder with my sister. You kind of have to use your imagination.

I was recently at Elevation, a tribal bellydance workshop weekend in Golden Colorado where I was introduced to many dancers I didn't know before. One of these troupes was Sadiqa (whose logo incorporates the lovely peacock feather). I really enjoyed their fluid and playful style. So, I'm sharing them with you.

Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania dance troupe Sadiqa (Kari Merlina and Joanna Abel) brings its own innovative sense of Middle Eastern Dance to the stage. Their unique approach to this ancient artform is a fusion of traditional and contemporary movement complimented by a variety of music whether live or recorded. Their elegant and fluid dancing combined with sharp, defined movement shows this duos precision and charm.

The peacocks on the wall almost disappear amongst the floral wallpaper, like the girl disappearing in her cowl.

This is a clip from the movie Chaplin, about Charlie Chaplin's life. The peacocks sit on the mantle behind a Nazi visiting L.A. and all the stars there. Charlie has the pleasure of insulting the Nazi.

Wall decals are a great way to change the tone of a vertical space without painting or hanging anything. They're easy to remove, too. These are all available on etsy. The one above can be bought here. These next two can both be found here and here, on Popwall's etsy store. They're clearly the same decal in different colors, but just that change, the placement, the color of the wall behind it, and the placement make a big change in how they look.

There's also a more whimsical choice.

I like how abstract this laundry bag is. Just barely enough peacock there.

This April 20th aka "4-20" in Boulder there was one of the largest collections of marijuana legalization supporters ever. Here's a picture of CU that day.

You could smell the weed in the air, several blocks away from this scene. Snarfs, the sandwich shop where I work, doubled and nearly tripled it's normal daily sales. Ahh, the munchies.
Within the past year, medical marijuana has been legalized here, and so there are dispensaries on many corners and lots of people have figured out a way to get a medical card for the drug. I don't smoke, but am loosely in favor of legalization of marijuana, though I don't agree with its legalization being solely through the 'medical' pathways. So many people are clearly blurring that distinction and using it for recreational purposes under the guise of 'pain relief'.
In any case, this whole April, here, has been full of various cannibis-related events. And I particularly loved the above peacock poster.

When I worked at Worlds Apart, we carried these cute aprons, this one with a peacock feather print.

Found this little treasure hidden away in my old boss's shelves. Probably from Ecuador. Maybe Peru?
